Orpen’s son and daughter are playing with toy soldiers at home. They are reflected in a lacquered tray while Orpen’s manipulation of complex light sources, exterior and interior, demonstrate his compositional and technical skill. Eddie’s hair, fringed and long with ringlets, was common in boys of the time; he was still wearing this style while at Chiswick High School where he was taught by E.C. (Lolly) Yeats.
