18. Iris with Flouncy Bonnet

Monksgrange c1900 ref: GOAP 0497

Here, Orpen illuminates his daughter in a classic chiaroscuro composition of strongly contrasting light and dark in the manner of 16th century artist Caravaggio. The Tate Gallery in London notes that “Chiaroscuro is generally only remarked upon when it is a particularly prominent feature of the work, usually when the artist is using extreme contrasts of light and shade.” This is strong evidence of Orpen bringing his knowledge of academic art to his work to the benefit of its significance to Irish photography.
