Orpen poses a visual puzzle using the white lichens that grow on the decoratively incised cross shaft and the background wall which run diagonally upwards from left to upper right. At first glance the top of the cross shaft could be an integral part of the wall but it takes time to rationalise the image after close scrutiny.
